Manual

Slightly more readable PDF versions of the instruction manuals can be downloaded here:

The functionality is mostly identical between the different versions, with one notable exception: To enter the pairing routine on the Unleashed Dx000 and D90 an MC-DC2 Remote release is required, whereas on the Unleashed D200+, the camera shutter button can be used instead.

GPS Receiver

The initial pairing is described in the instruction manual of each product. The instructions can be downloaded in English and German at www.foolography.com/support/unleashed. The pairing only needs to be done once at the beginning. From then on the Unleashed remains paired with the GPS receiver even if you change the batteries of the camera or GPS receiver.
Please check all the points described in FAQ “The pairing doesn’t work. What can I do?”. Especially, please check the following: To be able to pair the Unleashed with the Bad Elf GPS Pro/Pro+, make sure the GPS’s Firmware is up to date (using the Bad Elf iOS app) and then change the Bluetooth settings to always allow PIN 0000 for pairing. Without this setting, the Unleashed won’t be able to pair. If you’ve purchased the GPS Pro from us directly, these settings are already changed.
Yes, you can do that. Usually you cannot use two Unleasheds with only one GPS receiver at the same time (the exception is with a Bad Elf GPS), but you can of course pair two or more Unleasheds with the same GPS receiver and use them separately.
Yes, it does. However, from our side, we don’t provide an Android App for Geotagging. If you would like to use your Android phone as a GPS receiver, you would need to find or program an App yourself.
In theory yes but in practice no since Apple won’t allow direct access to the Bluetooth interface for developers. Any hardware that wants to communicate with the iPhone needs a special chip which is not yet built into the Unleashed. Therefore the current Unleasheds cannot communicate with the iPhone.
Yes and no. Usually you cannot use two Unleasheds with only one GPS receiver at the same time (the exception is with a Bad Elf GPS), but you can of course pair two or more Unleasheds with the same GPS receiver and use them separately. Since our cooperation with Bad Elf you can actually use one GPS Pro with multiple Unleasheds and or iOS/Android devices.
In general the Unleashed can be paired with any Bluetooth® enabled GPS receiver. The choice always depends on the purpose you want to use it for (rough weather conditions, fast moving objects etc.). We have made good experiences with Bad Elf GPS receivers and are currently selling the Bad Elf GPS Pro and Bad Elf GPS Pro+. Both are excellent GPS receivers that have a back-lit screen, logging, great battery life, and are MFI licensed (iOS compatible!). The Pro+ additionally uses Glonass and has a barometric altitude sensor.
Any GPS Receiver that outputs GPS Data via Bluetooth® using the NMEA Protocol. Basically this means any Bluetooth® GPS receiver currently on the market. Please also see our compatibility list. GPS receivers that only communicate via BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) are not compatible with the Unleashed. Also some Navigation Systems have Bluetooth® capabilities but usually these are limited to strictly hands-free functionality in combination with mobile phones. Sadly they do not output the GPS data via Bluetooth® so they won’t work with the Unleashed. Some popular examples are the Garmin nüvi® and zumo® series.

This might be the case. Unfortunately, we don’t give out a list of merchants, but recommend using a web-search to see if there is a dealer in your country offering the Unleashed.
Yes. As long as your Unleashed with its plug fits on the DSLR you can switch the camera as often as you want. There is no special starting routine necessary. Once your Unleashed is paired with a Bluetooth GPS receiver you can unplug it, change camera or just leave it on the camera. Your Unleashed will just start working as soon as you turn on the DSLR. To see which cameras your Unleashed is compatible with, please have a look at our compatibility list.

No. The Unleashed definitely will tolerate some drops of water (e.g. rain) but it is not made to be exposed to a high impact of water.

Using the D5000 and D3100 we have actually just taken it off entirely – if you pull on it slowly but firmly, it will come out – if you do so at an angle, it comes out undamaged, so you can always replace it if you want to. Some customers have chosen to cut a hole in it to keep the sealing effect. We do not have a replacement cover but might look into it in the future.
For the D7000 we did not come up with a satisfying solution yet. The rubber does not come off easily and we haven’t been able to test it properly. One of our customers solved the problem by cutting a whole into the rubber which still allows the Unleashed to connect to the port.

The Unleashed is designed to always stay on the camera. This is why we integrated smart power saving functions. While active and taking pictures the Unleashed D200+ draws 11.0 mA from the camera. After 15 minutes of inactivity the Bluetooth® connection is disabled. It then only consumes 1.85 mA. After 45 minutes of inactivity the Unleashed goes into a deep sleep and only needs 0.066mA. This is so little energy, it would take several years to deplete the camera battery.

Latitude, Longitude, Altitude, Date & time (UTC), number of satellites used to calculate position. It can also store the compass heading, but that requires a Bluetooth® GPS with compass and there is only one that we know of: the Wintec WBT-100, which was discontinued a few years ago. It is also of limited use, since it’s a 2D compass, meaning it must be held as horizontal as possible to give an accurate reading.

It might be that the Unleashed’s casing is not transparent enough to see the LEDs properly. If you go somewhere darker you should be able to see the LED blinking red and green. If you still don’t see any LEDs blinking please make sure your Unleashed is plugged in properly so the Unleashed gets power by the camera.

If you have an Unleashed D200+, a MC-DC2 is not necessary to do the pairing. In case you have an Unleashed Dx000 a MC-DC2 remote control is necessary.

No. As long as you don’t set your Bluetooth GPS receiver back on factory settings the Unleashed and the receiver won’t get unpaired.

All our Unleasheds are tested before they get sent to you. Even though there might be a small chance the Unleashed is broken, please check the following point and retry the pairing routine:
  1. Your Unleashed is plugged in the right way – be careful to not have it plugged in upside down.
  2. For the Unleashed D200+: You keep the shutter release pressed and don’t let go by mistake.
  3. For the Unleashed Dx000: You have the MC-DC2 plugged into the Unleashed the right way.
  4. Your Bluetooth GPS receiver is turned on and is searching for Bluetooth devices.
  5. For Bad Elf GPS: To be able to pair the Unleashed with the Bad Elf GPS Pro/Pro+, make sure the GPS’s Firmware is up to date (using the Bad Elf iOS app) and then change the Bluetooth settings to always allow PIN 0000 for pairing. Without this setting, the Unleashed won’t be able to pair. If you’ve purchased the GPS Pro from us directly, these settings are already changed.
  6. Turn off all other Bluetooth devices in your area or make sure you don’t have many around you.

Software

Usually, your smartphone has a map function integrated in its photo library. That way, you don’t have to do anything but upload your photos to your smartphone. Since the GPS data i.e. the location is saved in the metadata of each photo, your phone will put them on a map automatically.

There is a lot of photo software on the market providing a map to show photos that have been geotagged. A few examples are:
  • iPhoto
  • Lightroom
  • panoramio.com
  • flickr.com

None! Everything happens in-camera. That’s the cool thing about direct geotagging – no more work needed at the computer.
