SUPPORT FOR THE BARCODE EDITION

General Information, Developer Details and FAQs.

Before You Start

Before plugging the Barcode Edition into your camera, go to the setup menu (wrench Icon) then under “GPS”. If there is an option to “Use GPS to set camera clock”, make sure you turn it OFF! The Barcode Edition repurposes GPS data to store Barcode Information, and also uses the GPS time and date fields for parts of the data. This could set your camera clock to a completely wrong date and time. Another setting that’s helpful but not crucial is to change the Date format (for Display only): Setup menu (wrench icon) -> World Time -> Date Format. Change this to “Y/M/D” for better legibility of really long or multiple barcodes.

Three Modes Of Operation

  1. singleID: Camera stores a single ID Barcode of up to
    • 36 numeric digits
    • D200+/Dx000: 18 alphanumeric characters
    • D300s: 36 characters
  2. multiID: Camera stores a multiple ID Barcodes:
      • D200+/Dx000:6 barcodes with up to 9 numeric digits *
      • D200+/Dx000:5 barcodes with up to 16 numeric digits *
      • D200+/Dx000/D300s: several alphanumeric barcodes, depending on length and similarity.
    * All barcodes must be the same length. First barcode is stored in full, following barcodes should be similar to first, or might be stored lossy.
  3. packages: Camera stores a single ID Barcode along with order information – packages and a background code:
    • D200+/Dx000: ID up to 9 numeric digits and up to 7 packages (A-Z or 01-99) of quantities up to 9
    • D200+/Dx000: ID up to 16 numeric digits or 8 alphanumeric digits and up to 5 packages
    • D300s: ID up to 36 alphanumeric digits, several packages (depends on ID length) of quantities up to 99.

General

There just as many possibilities for this as there are use cases for the Unleashed Barcode Edition. Many. You/the customer can find an image directly with a barcode, automatically sort images into a database, create personalized photo souvenirs without manual effort, etc.
No. The Barcode Edition is Plug’n’Play. As soon as you receive your Barcode Edition you can use it right away. The only exception is the Barcode Edition D300s. In order to use the Barcode Edition with the Nikon D300s you need a special firmware update from Nikon that you can get for free. You would need to send the camera to Nikon beforehand.
No. Once you’ve scanned a barcode, every photo you take afterwards will have this barcode embedded until you scan the next code or a special “erase” barcode that we provide.
Yes. The Barcode Edition will save up to six barcodes with a maximum length of 9 digits each. You just need to scan the codes in a row.
No. We don’t give out loaners to try. However, we do have a 30 days return policy so in case you are not happy with our product you can send it back and get a full refund.
No. Since the bundles are pre-paired and Bluetooth pairing is unique, there is no problem in using several modules right next to each other.
Yes, the barcodes are embedded in the photos’ metadata, JPG or RAW. So unless you delete the photo, or intentionally strip the metadata, the barcode will remain with the photo!
Besides the fact that it is small, wireless, portable and of high quality, a major factor is its speed and reliability. For example, there are several software providers that offer a workaround with QR Codes where the individual needs to hold up a large QR Code for an extra photo. The photographer then takes the photo of the QR Code and afterwards of the individual. This additional step needs to be explained to the customer and carried out with their cooperation. Later the software needs to detect every single QR Code correctly with many factors reducing reliability.
Not at all. We only sell pre-paired bundles of our Barcode Edition Bluetooth module and wireless barcode scanner that are ready to use. Our hardware is Plug-and-Play.

Barcode Scanner

No. The Bluetooth module always comes pre-paired with a wireless scanner. We developed special firmware for the scanners we offer, so it is not possible to use your own scanner – you won’t be able to pair the scanner with the Bluetooth module. We do however offer alternatives including a wireless RFID scanner in case customers wish to use these instead of laser barcode scanner. In case a purchased Barcode Edition barcode scanner breaks you can get in contact with us. In that case you’ll be able to purchase a separate scanner.
No. The Barcode Edition definitely will tolerate some drops of water (e.g. rain) but it is not made to be exposed to a high impact of water.
All of our Barcode Editions come pre-paired and are tested before they get sent to you. That means they work Plug’n’Play and do not need a special pairing procedure. Even though there might be a very small chance the devices are not working properly, please check the following points and retry using the Barcode Edition: 1. Your Barcode Edition Bluetooth module is plugged in the right way – be careful to not have it plugged in upside down. 2. The camera as well as the scanner is turned on. 3. You haven’t mixed up barcode scanners from other Barcode Edition bundles you purchased. 4. The scanner you use is bought from us and is the correct bundle partner of the Barcode Edition Bluetooth module you want to use it with.
No. A Barcode Edition module only works with the scanner it is paired with.

The Barcode Edition is designed to always stay on the camera. This is why we integrated smart power saving functions. While active and taking pictures the Barcode Edition Bluetooth Module D200+ draws 11.0 mA from the camera. After 15 minutes of inactivity the Bluetooth® connection is disabled. It then only consumes 1.85 mA. After 45 minutes of inactivity the Barcode Edition goes into a deep sleep and only needs 0.066mA. This is so little energy, it would take several years to deplete the camera battery.
When you scan a code and take a photo the entire barcode is saved in the EXIF data. In some cases (e.g. when the code is too long) it is necessary to spread the code over different metadata fields, however, the code will be put back together by the software.

Photo Software

We don’t recommend certain programs since every use case might demand different software. That is why we provide detailed developer information to implement a feature in your own software so you can work with the barcodes just the way you need to. In addition, we are constantly building new relationships with different web services and photo software providers to implement support for our solution. To get you started, we give out a sample script that adds the barcode to the filename of each photo. This is meant as a starting point for developers, but can be used in less complex workflows.

We don’t have our own software because each of our customers has different needs. Most already use either a web service or custom software, or need our solution to be integrated with the workflow software they already use.
